Mathematics

The Mathematics Program is designed such that each student will ultimately be able to think and communicate mathematically, thus enabling him/her to become a contributing member of society. The department offers a broad range of courses covering topics from remedial and basic arithmetic concepts up to and including preparation for the Advanced Placement (AP) Math Exam. This allows for a personalized math sequence for each student depending on his/her needs and aspirations. Our ultimate goal as a department is that each student will not only have gained mathematical knowledge, but will also be able to apply that knowledge in the modern world.

Algebra I is a full year course designed to equip the student with the fundamental tools of Algebra for his/her later study of mathematics and science. The topics covered are solving linear and absolute value equations and inequalities including systems of equations in two variables, an introduction to functions, polynomial manipulations, factoring quadratic equations, operations with integer and rational exponents, and solving problems modeled by linear and quadratic situations. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems.

Concepts of Algebra part 1 is a full year course designed to reinforce and/or develop the fundamental math skills that are needed at all levels of mathematics. The emphasis of this course will be placed on strengthening the foundational skills necessary to complete junior/senior level math and science courses. Topics such as distribution, combining like-terms and solving multi-step one variable equations will be presented with varied instructional strategies. Core topics addressed focus on one variable inequalities, functions involving two variable equations, rate of change and solving linear systems. Problems that model linear functions will challenge the student to use these skills to justify solutions.

(604) GEOMETRY CONCEPTS with Algebra-Col

Prerequisite: Concepts of Algebra or Algebra I

In this course, the first half of the year will be algebra focused. Core topics addressed are two variable inequalities, absolute value equations, working with integer and rational exponents, and polynomial manipulations. In the second half of the year, geometry concepts will be discussed to provide the student with the basic facts of plane and solid geometry.

Geometry Honors is a course that will provide the student with the basic facts of plane and solid geometry. This is accomplished through the solution of a wide variety of problems set at a higher degree of difficulty. Special attention is also paid to developing and enhancing critical thinking skills. Throughout this course more rigorous and in depth problems are solved.

A student in algebra II honors will continue the study of algebraic concepts including performing arithmetic on polynomial expression, working with rational expressions, be introduced to and manipulate complex numbers. Problems that model quadratic, square root and exponential functions will be explored. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators, will be used regularly for instruction and assessment. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared for honors pre-calculus and other higher-level mathematics courses.

Topics discussed include solving radical equations in one variable, graphing quadratic, absolute value and radical equations, function translations, and arithmetic with matrices. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relations and use those representations to solve problems. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators, will be used regularly for instruction and assessment. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared for pre-calculus and other higher-level mathematics courses.

Trigonometry is a field of mathematics in which the geometric properties of the angles and edges of triangles are used to measure lengths. Students will study conic sections, definitions of the six trigonometric functions, their graphs, the Law of Sines, the Law of Cosines, and trigonometric identities. There is an emphasis on verification of trigonometric identities using all of the basic trigonometric identities. This course will develop the student’s mathematical concepts, improve logical thinking, and help to promote success as a major emphasis is placed upon problem solving. Also in this course, matrices will be explored and connected to solutions of multi-variable equations. Students will use graphing calculators in activities that are appropriate to the topics being studied.

This course is the study of Discrete Math, also called finite mathematics or decision mathematics. The content encompasses the study of mathematical structures that are fundamentally discrete in the sense of not supporting or requiring the notion of continuity. Objects studied in discrete mathematics are largely countable sets such as integers, finite graphs, and formal languages. Topics include: Sets and Functions, Logic, Numeration Systems, Number Theory, Combinatorics and Probability, Circuits, and Voting Apportionment.

AP Calculus is primarily concerned with developing the students’ understanding of the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The courses emphasize a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. The connections among these representations also are important. Students in this course will study properties of elementary functions and concepts of calculus (derivatives, integrals and their applications). This course will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Calculus AB examination in May.

Calculus is the ideal culmination of high school mathematics. It utilizes the skills acquired in algebra, geometry, and analysis and applies them to the solution of interesting problems. For the undecided student, it allows a sampling of college mathematics. The potential math major is challenged and provided a head start towards college level work. Students in this course will study properties of elementary functions and concepts of calculus (limits, derivatives, and applications of such).The solution of application problems is stressed throughout the semester.

(647) ADVANCED PLACEMENT STATISTICS

The purpose of the AP statistics course is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes such as exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns and statistical inference. This course will prepare students to take the Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics examination in May.

Most households have an unsolved Rubix Cube but you can esily solve it learning a few algorithms.
